Two meanings. One approach to the craft.

Shinken is written 真剣 and read しんけん. In Japanese, the word has two meanings that come together in the work we have chosen to do.

A real sword.

In its concrete sense, shinken is a real sword with a cutting edge. The word distinguishes it from the wooden and bamboo swords used in training.

Working with seriousness.

Shinken also describes taking something seriously and applying oneself in earnest. In the expression shinken ni (真剣に), it can convey doing something seriously or with dedication.

What that means at our bench.

For us, the two meanings belong together. The blade is the object of our care. Seriousness defines how we care for it.

At the bench, this attitude takes the form of concrete decisions: understanding the blade’s construction, assessing the work needed, choosing suitable techniques and abrasives, and respecting the limits of the material.

In study, it means questioning explanations, looking for evidence and acknowledging what remains to be understood. With clients, it means explaining the work and agreeing on what will be done.

That is the commitment carried by the name Shinken: attention to every blade and responsibility for every choice.

Care for the edge. Seriousness in every choice.
